The Washington Post published an op-ed on January 4, 2019 explaining why the new administration of Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro could have a devastating impact on climate change and indigenous rights if he removes or ignores protections for the Amazon rainforest:
"Worldwide, deforestation is responsible for 15 percent of annual planet-warming emissions. As the Amazon rain forest shrinks, fighting climate change is far harder. With wholesale deforestation, the job would be near-impossible."
