The Passing of ABC Founder, Dr. Thomas Lovejoy

Updated: Dec 28, 2021

The Amazon Biodiversity Center is deeply saddened by the passing of our Founder and President, Dr. Thomas Lovejoy, on December 25, 2021.

Dr. Lovejoy's accomplishments and contributions to the Amazon rainforest, humanity's understanding of conservation, and to global ecosystems would fill several books. Among them, he founded the Biological Dynamics of Forest Fragments Project (BDFFP) in Manaus, Brazil, in 1979, which for over 40 years has trained generations of conservation biology experts and advocates. And in 2018, he founded the Amazon Biodiversity Center so that it could sustain the BDFFP in perpetuity and carry on his world-changing advocacy.

There is much more to say about our remarkable founder and leader and his life's work -- and we hope to in the near future. For now, we just want to acknowledge the passing of our leader and the massive space left behind in the conservation community.
